WINIFRED E. BROWNELL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
As part of its ongoing “Celebration of Women in Film and Arts”, the Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) is proud to announce the winner of the annual Winifred E. Brownell Scholarship Fund. Named after retired Dean of the URI College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Winifred E. Brownell, the scholarship pays recognition to her career championing the arts and humanities at the University. The annual award is for $1,000 and is presented without restrictions to students at the University of Rhode Island, allowing the winner to use the money as they see fit. Two winners were chosen for 2021, each to receive the full amount.
This year’s winners are Abigail Amatucci and Daisy Gates.
THE RIIFF SCREENPLAY COMPETITION AWARD
Presented to Edward Balli from Canada for his screenplay “Leadeth,” that tells the story of an American who travels to a remote cabin in the Canadian wilderness to reunite with his estranged friend. But as secrets from their past unravel, he finds himself trapped with a burgeoning madman.
This year’s winners included Tanni Chaudhrui, who received this year’s Grand Prize in the RI Spotlight on New England category for her script “Anna and Ahana,” Adva Reich from Israel, whose screenplay “Project Fog” was awarded the Grand Prize for Best International Screenplay, and seventeen year-old Bella Ramsey from the United Kingdom, whose screenplay “Mila” received the grand prize in a new category, “Screenwriting Discovery.”
Screenplay Competition winners received specialty prizes provided by our festival sponsors: Final Draft and Inktip.

A childhood filled with laughter and friends, singing and games—cut short by the circumciser’s knife. Listen as Messania shares her spiritual journey of identity from her rural Kenyan home to see how this strong woman—who could have remained just a statistic—found the determination to escape abuse, challenge harmful cultural norms, and sing a new song of freedom, for herself and for girls like her everywhere.

2018 FESTIVAL AWARDS FOLLOWS:
BEST SHORT FILM
GRAND Prize: (RIIFF’s Official Academy Nomination)
“Marguerite” | Directed by: Marianne Farley | Canada, 2017.
JUDGE’S COMMENTS: “I almost always try to avoid the word “beautiful” when I critique art, but I
guess sometimes you simply can’t reject it for any other critical terms. This is a deeply beautiful
film, even with its frightening glimpses of the infirmity of old age. The script and editing could not
be more perfect.”
FIRST PRIZE:
“The Collar” | Directed by: Viktoria Runtsova | Russia, 2017.
Tied With:
“Woe is Me” | Directed by: Simon Cartwright | United Kingdom, 2018.
BEST SHORT ANIMATION
GRAND Prize: (RIIFF’s Official Academy Nomination)
“One Small Step” | Directed by: Bobby Pontillas | China/USA, 2018.

BEST SHORT DOCUMENTARY
GRAND Prize: (RIIFF’s Official Academy Nomination)
“Father K” | Directed by: Judd Ehrlich | USA, 2018.
JUDGE’S COMMENTS: “Documentaries are only as strong as their subject, and Father K is an inspirational subject. In these times it’s important to remember that causes can be ignited by individuals but are sustained by communities. This is an important film.”
FIRST PRIZE:
“Zion” | Directed by: Floyd Russ | USA, 2017.
Tied With:
“Guns Found Here” | Directed by: David Freid | USA, 2018.
WINIFRED BROWNELL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
BACKGROUND:
Beginning on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, a special year long “Celebration of Women in Film and Arts” was launched by the Festival. In a recent study by The Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, at San Diego State University, RIIFF was one of 23 “high profile” film festivals in the United States that was surveyed. What was striking about the study was that women accounted for 29 percent of directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors, and cinematographers working on the indie films screened at the examined U.S. festivals in 2017-18. At the Rhode Island International Film Festival, that number was 41 percent with films selected by an international team of judges for quality, not a quota.
This year, the Festival’s percentage is even higher. Out of nearly 300 films screening at RIIFF, 193 were created by female writers, directors and producers. That number translates to 65% of all the films at this year’s Festival had a woman at the helm.
Here are the official numbers:
FEMALE DIRECTORS: 99
FEMALE PRODUCERS: 72
FEMALE EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS: 22
= 193
FEMALE SCREENWRITERS: 18
FEMALE EDITORS: 48
FEMALE SOUND EDITORS: 14
= 80
TOTAL: 273
To celebrate this achievement, the Festival dedicated this year’s event to Dr. Winifred E. Brownell, a groundbreaking educator and Dean Emerita of the Arts and Sciences at the University of Rhode Island. Her visionary work propelled the University to become a leading hub for film media studies and nurtured the Festival during its infancy, spurring it to become the internationally acclaimed event that it is today. The Festival is also establishing a $2,000 annual scholarship in her name that pays recognition to her career championing the arts and humanities at the University of Rhode Island and a leading female voice in higher education.
This year’s winner of the Award: Alyssa Botelho, a University of Rhode Island student in the Harrington School of Communication and Media.

“The Silent Child,” directed by Chris Overton from the United Kingdom (2017). “The Silent Child” follows the story of a profoundly deaf child, and the deaf-specialized social worker who struggles to help the family try to understand their child’s deafness.
ANIMATED SHORT:
“Coin Operated,” Directed by Nicholas Arioli from the United States (2016). “Coin Operated” is an animation that spans 70 years in the life of one naive explorer, as he works to earn enough money to take a coin operated space ship to outer space.
DOCUMENTARY SHORT:
“Marian,” Directed by Rick Rodgers, a Rhode Island native and Rhode Island School of Design Graduate. Filmed over eight years, “Marian” documents the final years of renowned actress Marian Seldes’ life and touches on the themes of identity, the worship of others and the deterioration of family.
INDUSTRY AWARD WINNERS & SPECIAL FESTIVAL FOCUS:
Douglas Trumbull, renowned visual effects artist for such films as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” (which is celebrating its 40th Anniversary in November), “2001: A Space Odyssey,” and “Blade Runner” received this year’s Inaugural Gilbert Stuart Artistic Vision (Lifetime Achievement) Award.
Johnny Wilson, visual effects artist for such films as “Ant Man,” “Doctor Strange,” and “Captain America: The First Avenger” was presented by Steven Feinberg with this year’s RI Film & Television Office Dream Maker Award
A major and important focus of this year’s Festival was on new advances in Healthcare and featured several sold out events including the presentation of THE POWER OF FILM: Can a Film Change the World? Presented by IMCS (Integrated Micro-Chromotography Systems), this special showcase centered on films that show how very brave people confront the challenges we all face in just living our lives. They discover how these challenges can push personal boundaries and learn how the power of our shared humanity – the daily struggles and fights we all have – can ultimately lead to a new and more empowering future.
The focal point of the event was a presentation of two documentary films: the feature “Stumped” directed by Robin Berghaus and the World Premiere short, “Life & Atrophy,” directed by Gareth Burghes.
“Stumped” is the story of Will Lautzenheiser whose life was derailed by a deadly infection that left his arms and legs amputated. Risking his life, Will signed up for the experimental transplant program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the hope of regaining his independence. Told as a deeply personal story, “Stumped” reveals how Will copes with the loss of his career; navigates an evolving relationship; and gradually transforms, physically and spiritually, with newly transplanted arms. Filmed over four years, “Stumped” explores the human spirit and our willingness to overcome challenges when daring to see what lies ahead.
“Life & Atrophy” follows the journey of a family to find an experimental treatment for their son after he is diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). This disease impacts 1 in every 10,000 births and is the leading cause of genetic death in infants by causing progressive muscle weakness. Once children are diagnosed with the condition families are told to go home and love their children because there is no treatment and no cure. The McIntosh family fought to find an experimental treatment for their son Miles in an effort to save him from this debilitating condition. The families of SMA exemplify the fortitude of human strength and compassion, where together we can break out of our genetic shackles.
